few days after 9/11, just before one of the boats deployed, a hand lettered
banner with
the following message to the terrorists appeared at the entrance to the
Submarine Base, "We
have you in our sights!" That
said it all. |

The USS
Seawolf
SSN-21 was built at Electric Boat in Groton
and is currently based at the Navy's Submarine Base, also in
Groton. Seawolf is 353 feet long, has a beam of 36 feet and
displaces about 9,137 tons submerged. The Seawolf carries a
crew of 12 officers and 121 Sailors.

Jim Wilson, in his 1998
Popular
Mechanics article on the Seawolf, when given the once in a
lifetime chance to drive the 52,000-hp submarine said, "To my
surprise, the helm answers with as much back-pressure as the
steering wheel on my Subaru." Why doesn't my job
have benefits like that!

Christening
of the Seawolf SSN-21 took place at Electric Boat in Groton on
July
19, 1995. Her first at sea trial was in 1996.
SSN-21 was the third boat to bear the name Seawolf and the
second to be built in Groton. SS-28
was launched in 1913 and decommissioned in 1920. SS-197 was
launched in 1939 and lost at sea in 1944. SSN-575 was built in
Groton at EB and launched in 1955. It was our second nuclear sub and
was decommissioned in 1987. |

This

| The lighthouse and nearby houses are
on New London's Pequot Ave., which runs along the river to Long Island
Sound. One of the best places for submarine viewing
is on Pequot, just past Harbor Light,
by the private beaches. There's space there to pull over and park for a
bit. Subs can be
seen from afar at Ocean Beach, New London's public beach, and from adjacent Neptune Beach, which is a private association
beach. |
