New London is located at the mouth of the Thames River where it joins Long Island Sound. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy  is located 10 minutes north of downtown New London just across the road from Connecticut College.

Mitchell College is on Pequot Ave along the water. Ocean Beach is a public, white sand beach on Long Island Sound with restaurants, an arcade, a health club, miniature golf and a boardwalk. You can see photos of the beach at the New England Pictures website. Foxwoods Casino offers Ocean Beach discounts to Wampum Rewards card holders.

Visit an 1839 fort at Fort Trumbull State Park complete with old canons. To find out about some of the exciting new development in New London look at the NLDC (New London Development Corporation) site. Attend a live stage or musical performance at the Garde Arts Center.  Have a bite to eat at the riverfront Bank Street Road House. This is the place for blues. Check their website for current performers.


The Thames River Heritage site lists activities at Fort Trumbull, the Custom House Maritime Museum, and other local events.  Check with the New London Mainstreet Organization for special events like the Harvard Yale 150th anniversary Regatta on June 7th.


The New London Gazette website covers just about everything of interest in New London, much more than we can include here.  It has information on ferries, galleries, museums, walking tours, Ocean Beach, restaurants, history, and general information galore.  Be sure to check it out.

Settlers came to this region in the 1600s.  The  Antientest Burial Ground, opened in 1652, contains early colonial graves. The oldest-known graves of Black colonists, including the Black mayor of New London, can also be found there.

The Gazette sells a searchable CD of The Diary of Joshua Hempstead 1711 - 1758.  This personal diary of an early resident gives a unique insight into daily colonial life and the language of the time.

Revolutionary War patriot Nathan Hale, famous for the line "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country", taught in New London before entering the war.  His schoolhouse is still here.

Other historical sites including Eugene O'Neill's boyhood home, Monte Cristo Cottage, and the 1756 Shaw-Perkins Mansion are described at the Gazette site. Directions to Hale's schoolhouse and other sites can also be found there.

You can walk to many of the above locations, but some require a car.  If you  need a taxi to get around New London, call 443-4321. 

Oh, did I mention the lobster?   Why not take a ride on a real lobster boat followed by a reasonably priced picnic style lobster dinner right on the dock.  The Seapony (443-0795), located at T. A. Scott's Lobster Dock in New London, just off of Howard St., offers tours of the harbor on a real lobster boat.  Check out their harbor photos at www.seapony.com.  After your cruise have a bite, or a claw, right there on the dock at T. A. Scott's, 439-1741.

Wyland whale wall mural just off of State St.  This sperm whale mural was created during Wyland's (he likes to be called just Wyland) 1993 east coast tour.  The artist has committed to create 100 of these murals to heighten awareness about the plight of whales and other sea creatures.  His first class website can be found at http://www.wyland.com/wyland2.html.

The wall was recently refurbished by local mural artist David Bishop.
