Ledge Light

We took the web camera
down permanently due to Sept 11th and the potential risk of showing
live submarine and Coast Guard traffic.

New London County has two of the most unique schools in the world, the US Coast Guard
Academy and the US Submarine School at New London.
Both schools provide us with interesting viewing. Not only do we see
Coast Guard vessels, but if you're really lucky you can get a glimpse of the US Coast
Guard tall ship Eagle, which is based at the Academy. In this photo of three
guys from Norway, you can see the Eagle docked in the
background.) When the weather's nicer you can sometimes see a school
of Coasties (USCG students) learning how to sail in one person
sailboats. Submarines from the base pass by frequently. It's still a
thrill for me to see a passing sub. A friend said one of the
most memorable sites he has ever seen was the Eagle passing a sub on
the river and each saluting the other in their own way. You can
also see ferries passing the lighthouse regularly. In warm weather the area is covered
with white sails.
